How do you build 16 new sustainable waterfront homes in Medemblik—completely gas-free? That was the core challenge behind this project. The goal was to create a heating solution that is both sustainable and silent, while ensuring the homes operate entirely without natural gas.

These 16 homes are part of a new water-rich residential area that will eventually include around 200 sustainable houses. The development contributes to the renewal and rejuvenation of the housing stock in the municipality of Medemblik.

The homes are built with sustainability at their core and are fully gas-free, meaning they rely solely on the electricity grid. They are also designed to be as energy-neutral as possible—generating as much energy as they consume. As a result, net energy usage is effectively zero, offering residents significant savings on energy costs.

To support this, 128 PVT panels have been installed across the 16 homes. These panels act as an efficient and silent energy source for the heat pumps, producing both electricity and thermal energy.

On the recommendation of the Medenblick Historical Society and the Medemblik city council, the streets in the area are named after mills. This pays tribute to the remains of a historic watermill discovered on the site, once part of a network of fifteen mills built between 1550 and 1585.

The project was made possible through a collaboration between property developer Meacasa—known for its sustainable and organic design approach—construction company Nieuwe Bouwers B.V., and installation partner Van Dam Groep.
